Asbestos at the Observatory Building in Dickson

ACT Health has become aware that the Observatory Building in Dickson contained some asbestos in its structure. It is possible that this was damaged in the recent fire and that asbestos fibres have been released.

Because the relatively short duration of the exposure to loose asbestos fibres, the probability that any exposed individuals would contract an asbestos-related disease is very low.

Worksafe ACT has secured the site and measures have been put in place to prevent the generation of asbestos dust. It is likely that the remains of the Observatory will need to be demolished in the near future. This work will be undertaken by an accredited asbestos removal firm using measures to prevent the production of asbestos fibres.

Members of the community who are concerned about their possible exposure to asbestos fibres and the health implications are advised to seek further advice from their General Practitioners.

About Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre that was used in many products in the building industry for its strength, insulating properties and resistance to fire and erosion.

A national ban of all asbestos products occurred in 2003 due to the health risks associated with their use. Damaged material containing asbestos can generate dust which can be inhaled and produce illness.

Asbestos related illness usually occurs many years after exposure.

The majority of people who have developed asbestos-related diseases have been exposed to relatively large number of fibres as a result of ongoing occupational exposure.
