Meningococcal C disease is preventable with immunisation.
End of year celebrations may be a time of high risk for meningococcal disease. All 15 to 19 year olds who have not had the vaccine are encouraged to get immunised.
Free vaccine is available for 1-5 year old children through GPs and Child Youth and Women's Health Program (CYWHP) Immunisation Clinics.
Symptoms of meningococcal disease may include headache and neck stiffness, joint pain, nausea and vomiting, lethargy, high temperature and a rash. Severe disease may develop within a few hours. People should seek urgent medical assistance if symptoms occur.
Note that meningococcal C vaccine does not provide protection against other strains of meningococcal diseases. Vigilance for the early symptoms of infection remains important for the whole community.
