Recall of weight loss products
Health Directorate today confirmed that three brands of weight loss product have been
found by the NSW Food Authority to contain sibutramine.
These products containing Sibutramine are:
- Moti Angel Coffee
- Subabe Acai Berry Coffee
- Leptin weight loss chocolate.
Sibutramine is a prescription medicine which is not permitted in foods, and which was recently withdrawn from sale in Australia due to concerns regarding the safety of the drug.
It has been found that taking Sibutramine is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or strokes in overweight patients. Sibutramine can also interact with many commonly prescribed medications.
These are marketed and labelled as ‘slimming foods’.
Commercial importers of these products are undertaking a recall due to concerns of a risk to public health.
Anyone who has already purchased these products are advised not consume them. They should be returned to the place of purchase or disposed of.
Individuals who may have imported these products for sale to others should not do so.
People considering using weight loss products should discuss a weight control plan with their general practitioner. It is important that people inform their doctor of any non-prescription products they may be taking so that their doctor can help assess the safety of doing so.
The NSW Food Authority is testing a range of similar products and ACT Health will alert consumers if any further health risks become known.
