Assistant Projects

ACT Health conducted a project in 2004 to examine the need for an Allied Health Assistant (AHA) training program in the ACT; determine the training requirements for an AHA; and explore the feasibility of expanding the number of AHAs employed in the ACT.

This project was undertaken collaboratively with the Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services (Therapy ACT).

Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance

In 2006, the first cohort of students enrolled in the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance at the Canberra Institute of Technology.

The program was initially offered in the disciplines of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Pathology.

From 2008 the program has been offered with the combined skillsets of

  • Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy

or

  • Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology

In 2009 the combined skillset of Nutrition & Dietetics and Speech Pathology was added to the training options.

The training program takes 2 semesters to complete. Further information is available on the CIT Website


Allied Health Assistants Project Phase 2: Nutrition & Podiatry

Phase 2 of the Allied Health Assistants Project ran from February to July 2007. This phase examined the feasability of ACT Health supporting training of Podiatry and nutrition assistants.

A wide range of key stakeholders joined a Steering Committee to guide the project.

Allied Health Assistant Evaluation Project

An evaluation of the impact of up-skilling ACT Health technical officers working in Speech Pathology, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Project ran from May to October 2009.

The project examined the impact of upskilling AHA's on clients, services, assistants and health professionals.
