Malignant melanoma of the eye

Malignant melanoma of the eye

Macroscopic
The specimen consists of an eye which was sectioned half and quarterly.
The half sectioned specimen shows a black stained retina.
The quarterly part of the specimen shows a black pigmented mass 7 mm in diameter.

Microscopic
The section shows a malignant melanoma of the choroid.
It contains both spindle type cells and epidermoid cells, some of which are relatively large
and pleomorphic.
There is heavy pigmentation which seems to be related more to the spindle cells. The area
with epidermoid type cells is relatively free from pigment.
The tumour appears to be confined to the choroid, although pigment laden macrophages
can be seen around some nerves which penetrate the sclera.
