Endocrinology is the study of hormone-producing (endocrine) glands and the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders.
Hormones are substance produced in very low concentration, which function in cells distant from where they are produced.
The endocrine system helps to regulate the body's internal activities and responses to external events.
Well-known examples of hormones are insulin and thyroid hormone. Disorders of the endocrine system include diabetes, osteoporosis, menopause and thyroid disorders.

Teaching (student, registrar)
The Endocrinology Department is an academic unit of the Australian National University (ANU) Medical School and the University of Sydney Canberra Clinical School. It is involved in the teaching of students enrolled in the Graduate Medical Programme. It is currently involved with curriculum development, tutorials and lectures for the new ANU Medical School, which began enrolling students in 2004.
The Unit is also accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for registrars undertaking Advanced Physician Training in Endocrinology. There is usually an Advance Trainee registrar in the Unit.
Quality improvement
The department conducts a weekly clinical audit meeting and there is a monthly journal club meeting. There is a monthly radiology review meeting.
The Department actively participates in a variety of Quality Improvement activities.
Research
The Department conducts clinical trials of novel treatments for type 1 and 2 diabetes and is actively involved in national and international multi-centre clinical trials.
Areas of basic scientific research include:
- Xenotransplantation of fetal pig proislets
- Diabetes in pregnancy
- Pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes
