Department of Neonatology and Centre for Newborn Care (CNC)
The Neonatal Department of the Canberra Hospital provides neonatal care to babies from the ACT and surrounding regions. The Canberra Hospital has more than 2500 deliveries per year and is a principal referral centre for high risk pregnancies. It is the only tertiary care neonatal unit in the region, which has a delivery population of 8000.
The CNC is divided up into three different levels of care within the unit. This includes Intensive Care (8 beds), High Dependency (8 beds) and Special Care (8 beds). The Centre for Newborn Care is also part of a larger network of Intensive Care Units Australia wide. The units admits up to 700 patients per year, of these 150 are of a birth weight <1500g and 40% are from outside of the ACT, either from NSW or Victoria.
The Centre for Newborn Care within the Canberra Hospital itself is recognised as a family and baby friendly hospital. So it is important to us that we provide the best possible care for babies and their families.

The Centre for Newborn Care community (families and Staff) believe patient and family centred care is fundamental to the mission of the unit. Family Centred Care incorporates open, effective communication and collaboration. We will strive to nurture caregivers, while supporting and empowering them to ensure babies’ best outcomes. All members of our community are asked to demonstrate kindness, compassion and respect for each other and all cultures.
