Let's Talk - For Suicide Prevention

Let’s Talk for Suicide Prevention is an ACT Health initiative that seeks to raise awareness about suicide prevention, as well as inspire and empower Canberrans to make meaningful connections with people who may be doing it tough.

2018 Let's Talk Funding Grants

ACT Health would like to congratulate six local community organisations who were successful in the 2018 Let’s Talk Funding Grants.

The objectives of the Let’s Talk Funding Grants are to:

  • raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention
  • provide information about where residents of the ACT can obtain assistance if they, or someone they know, is at risk of suicide
  • promote social connection in the ACT with people when they are going through a difficult time, and
  • reduce the stigma associated with suicide.

The Let’s Talk Grants have been awarded to four ACT community based suicide prevention projects:

  • The VITAL project, established by the AIDS Action Council of the ACT in partnership with A Gender Agenda, will develop awareness campaigns designed to specifically address mental health and suicide among our LGBTIQ community.

  • Lifeline Canberra will receive funding for the enrolment and training of 16 new lifeline crisis support volunteers, who will be able to assist an additional 3,000 callers in crisis in the ACT in their first 12 months.

  • Better support to schools and academic institutions will be provided through new suicide prevention presentations and workshops as part of the new Canberra’s Life-force Awareness and Suicide Prevention Program developed by Mind Blank Ltd and PCYC Canberra.

  • The Youth Coalition of the ACT will develop the new “Here for You: Enabling the Conversation on Mental Health” program that will encourage trained volunteers to assist others in our community by starting conversations and inquiring about their mental health.
