The Canberra Hospital Enhanced Operating Theatre complex includes operating theatres, anaesthetic rooms, pump room, sterile supply areas and scrub areas. There are currently 12 theatres in operation at Canberra Hospital and these theatres manage over 13,000 emergency and elective cases per year.
The Theatre complex encompasses the:
- Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (recovery)
- Operating Rooms
- Extended Day Surgery Unit (EDSU)
- Day Surgery Unit (DSU)
Surgical Bookings and the Pre-Admission clinic are located on the lower ground of the Theatre complex and are part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for your care.
If you are booked for a procedure, you will be asked to present to Theatre Reception where the administrative staff will commence your admission process. It is important that you bring with you documents that are relevant to your admission such as you medicare card, test results and any medical imaging (x-rays) that may be related to the condition that requires you to have surgery.
The nursing staff will conduct a pre-operative assessment in order to ensure that you are ready for your surgery and you will be prepared for your surgery.
Should you experience any difficulty it is important to bring your concerns to the attention of the nursing staff.

The Theatre Reception is located near the Intensive Care Unit, above the Emergency Department. Access to the Theatre waiting area can be gained via the entry into the Emergency Department, or by following the signage to the Theatre complex, located on Level 2 of building 12.
