Child At Risk Health Unit

The Child At Risk Health Unit (CARHU) is part of ACT Health's Division of Women, Youth and Children Community Health Programs based at the Canberra Hospital.

The unit provides medical examinations, health screens, education, consultation and therapy for children and their families/carers where there are concerns of child abuse and/or neglect.

Who can use this service?

All families with children in the ACT.

Service access

Contact the Duty Worker (6244 2712) during business hours with requests for service. The Duty Worker will give consultation on health related concerns about children/young people suspected of being abused.

A written referral is required from all health and other professionals where a clinical service is requested. A proforma is available.

For After Hours assistance call The Canberra Hospital switchboard on 6244 2222 to contact the Child at Risk Medical Consultant.

The service is free to Medicare and Asylum Seeker cardholders. Where eligible, clients will be bulk-billed.

Health professionals

Health and other professionals may consult with CARHU, however, the consulting does not remove the professionals' mandatory responsibility to report suspected non-accidental injury or sexual abuse of children and young people to Child Protection.
