Gynaecology and Antenatal Health

The Antenatal/Gynaecology Ward provides midwifery and nursing care for women who are either pregnant or require Gynaecology services.

About the Antenatal/Gynaecology Ward

The Antenatal/Gynaecology Ward cares for women:

  • requiring hospitalisation for a pregnancy related issue.
  • with babies if beds are unavailable in the postnatal unit.
  • who have had Gynaecological surgery or other conditions.
  • where available if you have a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • attending the Gynaecology Assessment Unit. (This is a triage area where women requiring Gynaecological or early pregnancy consultations are assessed following admission to the hospital Emergency Department).

Expert care

Midwives and nurses provide you with expert care in relation to your individual condition.

A team of midwives staffs the antenatal ward with 24-hour support from obstetricians, gynaecologists, neonatologists, and other specialists as required.

Other members of the health care team who may be involved in your care include social workers, physiotherapists, chaplains, Aboriginal liaison officers and interpreters available to assist you with any specific needs.

Support people

In special circumstances, following discussion with midwifery staff, partners or main support person may be able to stay on the ward. Accommodation is available in the hospital residences if required by calling (02) 6244 2358 (fees apply).

Midwifery and social work staff can provide additional information, including costs, of this service.

Visiting Hours

11am to 1pm and 3pm to 8pm daily.


A phone is provided beside each woman's bed. For incoming calls the phone number is marked on each phone. Mobile phones are permitted on the ward, ensure they are kept safe.


A television is provided for each woman. A fee is payable daily to a private television contractor, who will be available each morning to arrange connection and payment.
