Happy family with newbornThe Antenatal Clinic aims to provide increased continuity of pregnancy care. Midwives are available at all hospital antenatal clinics.

Women with uncomplicated pregnancies will generally be seen by a midwife for all pregnancy care and she will refer you to a specialist clinic if any problems arise.

We encourage all women attending the clinic to make their subsequent appointment while in the clinic.

Midwife only clinics

Midwife only clinics are available in the hospital antenatal clinic, and also in several community locations. This may also include visits with your GP.

Some women need to have pregnancy care through Canberra Hospital's Antenatal Clinic. For example, a pregnant women with diabetes will attend the clinic's Diabetes/Endocrine specialist clinic.

Staffing

All antenatal clinics are staffed by a specialist obstetrician, an obstetric registrar, a resident medical officer and one to two midwives.

Support Programs

'Step Ahead' Program - young parents support

This program provides pregnancy care by a known midwife, for women 21 years of age and under. This program includes outreach services at 'The Junction' & at Canberra College, education opportunities and social work support. Contact (02) 6244 3470

Pregnancy Enhancement Program - support for women exposed to substance use or mental health issues in pregnancy.

This program provides pregnancy care by a known midwife, and includes social worker and drug & alcohol worker support. Contact (02) 6244 3470 or email PEPTCH@act.gov.au

Special needs support

We can arrange interpreters as required for pregnancy care and individual education sessions for women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Phone (02) 6244 3470

Other women requiring extra support during pregnancy can contact the antenatal clinic to discuss her pregnancy care options with a midwife.
