Maternity Assessment Unit
The Maternity Assessment Unit or MAU is a "walk in" clinic for women who are greater than 20 weeks pregnant and experiencing pregnancy or postnatal related concerns requiring assessment and additional monitoring.
Examples can include early labour symptoms, reduced fetal movements, suspected rupture membranes ("broken waters") or blood pressure checks.
Women can self refer or be referred via their GP, the Antenatal clinic or other Maternity Service.
Women with complications who are less than 20 weeks pregnant will be referred to the Emergency Department (if urgent and outside operating hours), their GP, or the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU).
Opening Hours and Location
The MAU is open from 9am until 8.30pm with the last walk in being accepted at 7pm. The unit is staffed by 2 experienced midwives and a doctor. Outside these hours, women will be assessed in Birthing on Level 3.
The MAU is located on Level 2 of the Centenary Hospital for Women & Children, next to the Fetal Medicine Unit. Between the hours of 9-5pm, please present to reception on arrival. After 5pm, please proceed directly through to the unit on arrival.
If you have a continuity midwife (i.e. CatCH Program or Canberra Midwifery Program) you should contact your midwife first, who may refer you to the unit for assessment.
Staff in the unit can be contacted on (02) 6174 7355, however, please call PRIOR to coming in as we may be able to answer your concerns over the phone.
