Interprofessional Learning

The ACT Health Interprofessional Learning Project involves all health care workers, including allied health, administration staff, policy developers, nursing, midwifery, medical personnel and support staff.

ACT Health is committed to establishing an Interprofessional Collaborative Practice culture within the organisation through Interprofessional Learning interventions.

The ACT Health Interprofessional Learning Project seeks to positively influence both health care delivery and the education of our future health professionals.

What is IPL?

Interprofessional Learning (IPL) is the education process which helps to produce health workers who are willing and able to deliver health care through Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP). Interprofessional Collaborative Practice occurs when all the members of the health service delivery team (this includes all support workers such as reception staff, scientific and diagnostic staff) participate in the teams’ activities and rely on one another to accomplish common goals and improve health care delivery. Teams of health workers who are able to practice collaboratively help service delivery through maximising the strengths and skills of all the individual team members. In this way the patients, clients, consumers and their families, experience a high quality service in a safe, effective environment.

International awareness

There has been growing awareness and international recognition that health professionals need optimal collaboration practices to deliver coordinated, safe, effective and efficient health care. National and International collaboration is an integral part of IPL and the ACT Health IPL Project continues to build these vital networks.

The World Health Organisation has recently published a vital document for advancing the cause of Interprofessional Collaborative Practice.

Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice

In support of this global framework the participants of the 'All Together Better Health 5' international interprofessional conference held in Sydney, April 2010, endorsed the "Sydney Interprofessional Declaration".

In collaboration with 'Values Exchange', an online introduction to IPL is now available. It is recommended that you first explore this tool as part of a small group to gain an enhanced interprofessional experience.

A workbook has been designed to help you through the nuts and bolts of this tool.
