Nursing and Midwifery Office

The Nursing and Midwifery Office provides support to the ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer in the provision of strategic leadership to the nursing and midwifery professions by providing informed, evidence based advice on a range of local, national and international issues.

The Nursing and Midwifery Office also provides information and advice on workforce planning and reform, recruitment and retention, regulation and practice, safety, best practice, education, research and policy across ACT Health.

The Office works in partnership and collaboration with nurses and midwives, government officers, consumers, healthcare organisations including professional bodies, educational providers and key stakeholders.

The Office also works to support the National Health Agenda and the aims, objectives and legislative requirements of ACT Health, the Australian Health Professions Regulation Authority (AHPRA) and the Australian and New Zealand Council of Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers (ANZCCNMO).

The Office facilitates a forum - ACT Nursing and Midwifery Network - that will provide networking opportunities and enhance communication between all nursing and midwifery sectors in the ACT and support a progressive work environment that strives for innovation and excellence in nursing and midwifery practice.

ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer

The Nursing and Midwifery Office is led by Adjunct Professor, Dr Margaret McLeod, ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer. Dr McLeod brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience.

The Nursing and Midwifery Office supports the ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer in the provision of strategic leadership for the Nursing and Midwifery professions within the ACT.

As a member of various committees the ACT Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer provides leadership and advice and advocates for and promotes the ACT Nursing and Midwifery professions. The Australian and New Zealand Council of Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers (ANZCCNMO) is a network of all Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers (CNO)/Principal Nurse Advisers (PNA) in Australia and New Zealand working in Government.

The Council provides high level leadership and strategic policy advice through communication and collaboration with nursing and midwifery, other health professions and key stake holders, thereby enhancing a consistent response to nursing and midwifery and health related issues.

What we do

The advisors in the Nursing and Midwifery Office work with key stakeholders including State and National community and professional organisations, government departments, committees and nurses and midwives to achieve a number of key objectives.

Key objectives

Provide strategic advice to the ACT Government on a broad range of nursing and midwifery issues including workforce planning and reform, nursing and midwifery recruitment and retention, regulation, quality and best practice, education, training and scholarships, and research as well as nursing and midwifery related policy across the health and community care system.

Provide leadership and support to the nursing and midwifery workforce by ensuring appropriate linkages with all nursing and midwifery professional bodies.

Contribute to the achievement of government and organisational goals by working across the health sector to support the development and implementation of a variety of projects and initiatives related to nursing and midwifery.

Represent ACT Health at relevant forums and on appropriate working parties in relation to nursing and midwifery issues at the local, national and international levels.
