Duffy House

'Duffy House' is a 'home-away-from-home' accommodation for regional patients, and their carers, during cancer treatment at Canberra Hospital.

Prior to its development, regional cancer patients were offered accommodation in the Residences block at Canberra Hospital or were required to seek their own private accommodation which often added further to the financial and emotional stress for patients and families.

'Duffy House' is located at 45 Jemalong Street, Duffy and offers a relaxed environment, in a quiet suburban street, away from the hustle and bustle of a busy hospital campus.

It is less than 10km from the new Canberra Region Cancer Centre and complements the range of cancer care services we offer in the ACT.

Opened in September 2012, 'Duffy House' was supported by $1.789 million of funding from the Australian Government under the Health and Hospitals Fund. The funding provided for the purchase of the property, extensive renovations, special features, equipment, landscaping and fit-out. The refurbishment work was managed by ACT Health under the Health Infrastructure Program.

The Facility

Regional patients are able to access 'Duffy House' while receiving treatment at Canberra Hospital, which typically lasts for six to eight weeks. This length of treatment, and the distance patients may have travelled to receive their treatment in the ACT, makes it difficult for regional patients to return to the comfort of their own home between daily treatment sessions.

'Duffy House' can accommodate up to six patients and six carers and will help to reduce anxiety and stress during what is a difficult and challenging time for patients, families and friends.

While each of the six bedrooms has its own ensuite and a sitting room that offers a level of privacy for people staying in the house, a large communal living space on the ground floor provides for social interaction and support.

'Duffy House' is close to local shops and public transport, and is also close to open green space.

The development of 'Duffy House' received generous support from Chemworks who donated whitegoods, kitchen items, crockery and cooking utensils to the new facility.

'Duffy House' also complements the new Canberra Region Cancer Centre which is under construction on the Canberra Hospital campus.
