What is meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a severe infection that occurs when the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (commonly known as meningococcus) 'invades' the body from the throat or nose.

About Meningococcal Disease

Information for close contacts who require clearance antibiotics

If you have been in close contact with a person who has been diagnosed with meningococcal disease, you may require clearance antibiotics.

Rifampicin

Rifampicin is one type of antibiotic which is sometimes given to people who have been in close contact with a person who has meningococcal disease.

Ciprofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin is another antibiotic which is sometimes given to people who have been in close contact with a person who has a meningococcal infection.

The Communicable Disease Control Section is responsible for the investigation and surveillance of notifiable or infectious conditions in the ACT in order to control or prevent their spread in the community. This includes the promotion of immunisation, education and other strategies that help to limit the spread of diseases.
