Invasive Pneumococcal Disease

Invasive Pneumococcal Disease is caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Types of 'invasive' pneumococcal disease (IPD) include:

  • meningitis (infection of the membranes around the brain)
  • pneumonia (infection of the lungs) and;
  • bacteraemia (infection of the blood)
