The ACT Infection and Prevention Control Unit (IPCU) aims to minimise infection risks for patients, healthcare workers, students and the general public.
Our vision is to become leaders in Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C), mentor other infection control professionals and lead research in IP&C.
Our infection prevention control program incorporates the following key components to ensure it remains effective within acute care and community settings:
- implement and monitor hand hygiene compliance and products
- monitor and reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistant organisms and vaccine preventable diseases
- monitor multi resistant organisms and their adherence to infection control guidelines through staff education and policy development
- monitor and provide recommendations to improve cleaning standards
- monitor bloodstream and surgical site infections
- be actively involved in all renovations and building projects
- manage medical supply purchases and the procurement process for medical items
- ensure compliance with sterilisation standards and guidelines, including AS4187 and GENCA
- improve vaccination coverage of vaccine preventable diseases for healthcare workers in line with the Occupational Medicine Unit (OMU)
- support Antibiotic resistance working groups

ACT Health is fully accredited against the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. The work of ICPU aligns with the requirements of the National Standard Preventing and Controlling Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI).
HAI aims to minimise the risk of patients acquiring preventable infections. It also uses evidence-based strategies to ensure infections are effectively managed when they occur.
