Our Services

ACT Pathology is more than just a collection centre. We have doctors and scientists who specialise in the testing and diagnosis of diseases in many areas of specialty. Our areas of specialty include:

  • Anatomical Pathology
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Cytogenetics
  • Haematology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular Pathology

Pathology Specialities

Anatomical Pathology

Anatomical Pathology uses biopsy samples to detect and diagnose certain diseases, including the diagnosis of cancer, 100% of all cancers are diagnosed by Pathology.

A tissue diagnosis is important before starting your treatment which may involve major surgery, radiation or drugs, or treatments which can have major side effects.

Clinical Chemistry

Clinical Chemistry detects changes in blood and body fluids of a wide range of substances (electrolytes, enzymes and proteins) for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. We test and monitor for illness such as diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, cardiac markers and cholesterol.

Cytogenetics – Diagnostic Genomics

Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomal structure, location and function in cells. It includes the study of chromosome number and appearance, the physical location of genes on chromosomes and chromosomal behaviour in processes such as cell division. These techniques are used to diagnose such conditions as Downs Syndrome. Many genes have been identified that are associated with such diseases as leukaemia’s, lymphoma and breast cancer.

Haematology

Haematology is a discipline which deals with many aspects of those diseases which affect blood. Our Haematology department tests, diagnoses and treats blood diseases such as anaemia, leukaemia and lymphoma. We also care for patients with blood-clotting abnormalities and are responsible for ensuring blood transfusions are safe and available if needed.

Immunoassay

Our Immunological department offers a comprehensive diagnostic service to diagnose autoimmune diseases such as SLE and rheumatoid arthritis, Coeliac Disease and diagnosis, and measurement of specific antibody responses in conditions such as Hepatitis and HIV.

Microbiology

Our Microbiology department diagnoses infections caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses, and identifies the best treatment options and monitors antibiotic resistance.

Molecular Pathology

Molecular diagnostic pathology is a rapidly expanding field with cross-over in the genetic and microbiological areas. Diagnostic genomics incorporates the molecular testing for genetic disorders whilst the remainder of the molecular testing focuses on microbiological causes of infection and disease, such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia and influenza viruses.
