We provide acute care public health and hospital services for all people in need, particularly those living in North Canberra, Belconnen and Gungahlin.

Our second campus at Barton is home to Clare Holland House Hospice, the Community Specialist Palliative Care Service and the Calvary Centre for Palliative Care Research. These inpatient, outpatient and in-home specialist palliative care services reach patients right across the ACT and into the surrounding areas of NSW.

We offer an extensive range of medical, surgical and maternity services. Our Emergency Department is open 24 hours per day, every day of the year. Suitable patients may also be able to receive medical care in their home or other residential setting through Calvary’s Hospital in the Home program.

Maternity Services

We are committed to meeting your family’s individual needs during your pregnancy, birth and your parenting journey.

The Calvary Maternity Unit is family friendly, and women are encouraged to have their partner or a close friend with them during their labour and birth.

To book into our Antenatal Clinic we require a GP Referral and your details as requested in the Maternity Enquiry Registration Form.

Calvary Public Hospital Bruce performs planned (elective) and unplanned (emergency) surgical procedures.

Many surgical procedures are now undertaken in a day surgery setting, meaning you are admitted and discharged in a single day.

Our Emergency Department (ED) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all public holidays.

Please consider if your situation is a genuine emergency before coming to the ED.

If you experience any of the following symptoms you should attend the ED immediately:

  • breathing difficulties
  • heart attack symptoms (pain, pressure, heaviness or tightness in your; jaw, neck, shoulder(s), chest, back, arm(s))
  • stroke symptoms (Face, Arms, Speech, Time)
  • major accident
  • sudden collapse
  • uncontrollable bleeding
  • injury limiting normal function
  • pain which is not relieved by regular analgesia / pain relief medications

When you arrive at the ED a triage nurse will assess your condition and the urgency of your treatment. Patients with the most urgent conditions will be treated first and you may have to wait for treatment. There are no appointments in a public ED and people are not seen in order of their arrival.
