The ACT Government Analytical Laboratory (ACTGAL) is a the ACT’s primary public health multi-disciplinary scientific testing laboratory. It is comprised of four functional units undertaking a variety of activity to support the health of the ACT community.

The laboratory is quality accredited and is certified to ISO 9001 in Quality Management.

Forensic Chemistry

The Forensic Chemistry unit analyses illicit drugs and other relevant materials for a range of government and non-government entities.

The activity undertaken by the unit supports two of the three pillars of the National Drug Strategy. The service supports these through providing expert opinion and technical support for forensic investigations in ACT Courts where required and through support of legislative change and harm minimisation activities.

The unit is accredited to ISO17025 in Forensic Science.

Forensic Toxicology

The Forensic Toxicology unit undertakes analysis of various biological samples to support coronial investigations, road and traffic operations and other various legislation, and drug treatment programs.

The unit provides expert opinion and support for forensic investigations in ACT Courts where required.

The unit is accredited to ISO17025 in Forensic Science.

Environmental Chemistry

The Environmental Chemistry Unit provides a range of services, including Ambient Air Quality (AAQ) monitoring and performs asbestos identification and fibre counting.

Asbestos service

ACTGAL is currently unable to receive samples for asbestos analysis due to ongoing work in the laboratory space.

Microbiology

The Microbiology Unit provides microbiological analysis for food and water to support various ACT regulation activities, as well as investigation of food related illness outbreaks in partnership with the Health Protection Services Environmental Health unit.

The unit is accredited to ISO17025 in Biological Testing.
