The Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) is a 16 bed short stay unit for patients with complex medical problems.

The MAPU is a designated hospital ward designed to assess, care and treat medical inpatients for a period of less than 72 hours.

We are located on Level 7, Building 1 of the Canberra Hospital.

Admission criteria

At MAPU we accept patients who don’t have a clear diagnosis or have more than one diagnosis with no clear primary diagnosis.

MAPU is not suitable for patients who require cardiac monitoring, non-invasive ventilation or who have had a stroke.

You need a referral to access our services. This can be from:

  • emergency physicians and registrars
  • GP or nurse practitioner
  • regional hospitals
  • Canberra Hospital Mental Health services
