Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail. Carers Australia has a range of programs such as counselling and support groups, respite and education, and the Carers Recognition Program.
CarersACT – Support for Aboriginal Carers
The CarersACT Program Coordinator has a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural needs and works directly with carers to link them into culturally appropriate supports.
Burrunju Aboriginal Corporation
This program gives one on one support to Indigenous Carers, providing respite with activities and outings. The program helps Aboriginal Carers to access mainstream services.
