Our Community Paediatric and Child Health Service cares for children aged between 0 and 16 with behavioural concerns, developmental concerns or disability, who do not need regular care in the hospital.

About this service

We offer assessment, treatment and advice for children and young people with:

  • delays in their development
  • behavioural issues
  • concerns about how they are behaving at school or how they are coping with the classroom setting
  • disability (physical or intellectual) who are not under the care of another paediatrician.

Who we care for

Our services are available for children up to 16 years of age who have been referred by a GP.

We offer these services for free if you have a Medicare Card or an Asylum Seeker Card.

How to access this service

Your GP or medical practitioner will organise for you to access this service. Please ask your referring doctor to send us any reports, assessments or other information about your child or young person.

What to expect

Our Clinical Nurse Consultant will review your referral and contact you to discuss it. They will let you know which services or assessments are suited to your child’s needs.

Other members of our team, such as social workers, will also contact you to gather information and offer support. This may be a phone call or they may ask you to come for an appointment.

After this, our medical team will triage your referral.

If your child or young person requires an appointment with a paediatrician, you will receive a letter and a text message with the details of your appointment.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Your child’s personal health record (Blue Book)
  • Any assessments by other professionals such as speech therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or psychologist (if you have them)
  • Information from your school if they are having difficulties at school
