Our Endocrinology Service provides treatment and management to adults with general endocrinology conditions including thyroid cancer, pituitary disorders, endocrine conditions in pregnancy, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disorders, adrenal disorders and transgender medicine.

About this service

Our service is run by a team of Endocrinologists and an endocrinology nurse.

We provide individual medical clinic appointments.

Testing for endocrine conditions is performed by an endocrine trained nurse.

Endocrinology is also offered through North Canberra Hospital specialist outpatient clinics.

Who we care for

Our services are available for adults and adolescents within the ACT and Southern NSW region who have been referred by a GP or medical practitioner.

We care for both inpatients (people admitted to hospital) and outpatients (people who attend the hospital or a clinic for an appointment or procedure).

We offer these services for free if you have a Medicare Card/Pensioner or Asylum Seeker Card.

How to access this service

Your GP or medical practitioner will organise for you to access this service by providing a referral.

We will contact you when your referral has been received and triaged.

We will contact you again when an appointment is available.

You can reschedule your appointment by phoning (02) 5124 3794 between 8:30 am and 4:45 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) or via email diabetes@act.gov.au

What to expect

During your appointment, one of our clinicians will ask detailed questions about your health problems and the medications (tablets/injections) you take. They will do a physical examination and will probably order some tests, such as blood tests or scans, and follow up as needed. They may suggest changes to your tablets/injections.

Some appointments may be done by telephone or teleconference.

Our clinic will give you specialist information and advice. You will continue to have long-term care from your GP.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
