Our Renal Service cares for and treats people with problems related to their kidneys.

About this service

Renal Service Overview

We provide inpatient and outpatient renal care to people who live in the ACT and Southern NSW.

Renal care is focused on diagnosis and management of renal related medical conditions, hypertension, and electrolyte disorders.

We provide services including:

  • Inpatient services for all renal medical conditions
  • Acute haemodialysis and Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE)
  • Satellite haemodialysis in units located across the ACT and Southern NSW
  • Home dialysis service which includes peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis
  • Chronic Kidney disease program which focuses on preparing patients for dialysis with home-based therapies being a preferred option
  • Renal Transplantation which includes pre- and post-transplant care and a live renal donation program
  • Renal Supportive care program
  • Dialysis Access Service
  • Renal Weight Management program
  • Glomerulonephritis clinic focusing on patients with this form of renal disease
  • Renal outreach services for patients in Southern NSW.

A Renal Clinic is also offered through North Canberra Hospital specialist outpatient clinics.

Outpatient Renal Clinics

We offer outpatient renal clinics are offered via telehealth and face to face across the ACT and Southern NSW.

Clinics are conducted by Renal Doctors and nursing staff and are held in the following locations:

  • Canberra Hospital
  • Belconnen and Tuggeranong Health Centres
  • Cooma Hospital
  • Goulburn Hospital
  • Bega Hospital
  • Batemans Bay Hospital
  • Moruya Hospital
  • Queanbeyan Hospital.

Inpatient Services

The inpatient renal ward is a 12-bed ward and provides 24hr hour care for patients admitted under a renal doctor.

We provide a holistic service that cares for every aspect of your welfare - including your medical needs and psychological wellbeing. This is achieved through collaboration with our multidisciplinary team of ward nurses, nurse specialists, physicians, surgeons, therapists, counsellors and transplant coordinators. Our approach is evidence based, safe, empathetic and always patient-centred.

Outpatient Services

Haemodialysis

Haemodialysis is a treatment offered to people with end stage kidney disease. Our haemodialysis units are staffed by trained renal nurses and we have units located across the ACT and southern NSW. These include:

  • Acute Dialysis Unit, Building 1, Level 8, Canberra Hospital
  • Canberra Community Dialysis Centre (CCDC), Gaunt Place, Canberra Hospital
  • Belconnen and Tuggeranong Community Health Centres
  • Cooma Hospital
  • Bega Hospital
  • Goulburn Hospital
  • Queanbeyan Hospital
  • Moruya Hospital.

Renal Home Therapies

Our home dialysis training unit is in the ACT. We train, educate, and support you if you’re on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis at home.

If you live in Southern NSW and are on home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis you will be supported by Renal Outreach nurses in these areas.

Renal Outpatient Nursing services

Renal outpatient nursing services are located at Canberra Hospital. Our services include:

  • Chronic Kidney disease program. Nurses in this program support people with kidney impairment and prepares them for dialysis.
  • Renal Transplantation Service. This service includes pre and post transplantation care and a Live Kidney Donor program.
  • Renal Supportive Care program. The Renal Supportive Care nurse supports people with Chronic Kidney Disease who are experiencing severe symptoms related to their illness. The nurse also supports patients and families who opt not to have dialysis treatment.
  • Dialysis Access Service. This service is coordinated by a nurse who works closely with surgeons and doctors. We prepare people for dialysis through planning a vascular access for haemodialysis or special abdominal tube for peritoneal dialysis.

Who we care for

Our service provides care to patients who have a kidney or renal medical condition who live in the ACT and Southern NSW.

How to access this service

You need a written referral from your general practitioner (GP) to access Renal Services.

A renal doctor will review and triage your referral and decide when you need to be seen.

What to expect

We will let you and your GP will be know the outcome of the referral, including details of any appointment.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Medicare card
  • Any letters or correspondence from your GP
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
  • Medicines you need to take while you are here
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
