ACT Health provides a range of outpatient surgical services for the ACT community and surrounding region. Our aim is to provide timely access to elective and emergency surgery, with a focus on quality patient-centred care that is supported by evidence-based practice. We currently have 12 theatres in operation at the Canberra Hospital Enhanced Operating Theatre complex, with each managing over 13,000 emergency and elective cases per year. The complex includes a Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, Operating Rooms, an Extended Day Surgery Unit and a Day Surgery Unit.

Our Services 

We offer various surgical services at Canberra Hospital or Calvary Public Hospital. Please see the information below for surgery specific information.

Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac specialty surgery deals with cardiac and thoracic diseases that require surgical intervention, including coronary artery disease, lung cancer and chest wall injuries.

We are located within the Intensive Care Unit in a separate bay away from the general beds. The average length of stay on the Unit is 20 to 24-hours after surgery. You are then moved to the High Dependency Unit on Ward 6B.

Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery

The Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic is a specialty service within the Central Outpatient Department at The Canberra Hospital. The ENT clinic also provides expert clinical care in the diagnosis, treatment and management of adult head and neck conditions.

Our surgeons are specialists in all ENT related conditions, including endoscopic sinus and nasal surgery, laser surgery of the larynx and all head and neck cancer related surgery.

You can access the ENT clinic through a referral from your GP or specialist, The Canberra Hospital Emergency Department or the ENT team following an admission.

General Surgery

There are 3 general surgery teams that cover most general surgical problems, including breast cancer surgery and reconstruction, endocrine surgery, melanoma and urological and hernia surgeries.

The Canberra Hospital also provides an outpatient clinic for General Surgery that focuses on organs within the abdomen.

You can access our services through a referral from your GP or specialist. Once we receive your referral, we can triage your condition and allocate you an appointment time.

Appointments are conducted in the Central Outpatients Department, which is located near the Main Reception Desk on Level 1 of The Canberra Hospital.

Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery provides comprehensive care and treatment of patients with brain and spinal disorders.

Our neurosurgeons treat various conditions of the brain and skull, including tumours and aneurysms.

Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology offer retinal, corneal and emergency services. We conduct appointments in the Outpatient Department through referrals only. Please speak to your GP or optometrist about this.

We currently don’t offer general clinics for conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma. Your GP can refer you to a private ophthalmologist instead.

Oral Maxillofacial Surgery

The Oral and Maxillofacial Unit provide high, quality care for patients with diseases of the face, jaw, mouth and teeth, including facial trauma and oral cancer.

We offer various clinics for facial pain consultation, sleep apnoea surgery and oral pathology, as well as on-call facial trauma and dental services.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic surgery provides an outpatient Fracture Clinic for the review and management of newly identified fractures. The wait list for this clinic is actively managed to ensure you are treated within appropriate clinical timeframes based on the urgency of your needs.

We also offer a Registrar Review clinic for conditions that require urgent review by an Orthopaedic Registrar. You must be referred by your treating medical officer.

Pre and Post-operative patients are managed through the Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic. At the clinic you can be seen by a Consultant Specialist, Nursing staff or a Physiotherapist.

Plastic Surgery

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides an outpatient surgical service for the repair of damaged tissues and the treatment of major tissue loss. Our surgeons are specialists in various plastic and reconstructive surgery, including hand surgery, repair of facial injuries, tissue loss from head and neck cancers, reconstructive breast surgery and pressure sores.

You can access our services through a referral from your GP or specialist.

We also offer a Registrar Review clinic for conditions that require urgent review by a Plastics Registrar. You must be referred by your treating medical officer.

ACT Trauma Service

The ACT Trauma Service (ATS) aims to ensure all trauma patients receive optimal care from pre-hospital to discharge.

Trauma Orthopaedic Research Unit

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit undertakes broad based clinical studies for the surgical and medical treatment of musculoskeletal diseases. We also welcome and support targeted studies.

The Unit has established a collaborative laboratory facility based at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University.

Urological Surgery

Urology covers the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and reproductive organs. We provide diagnostic services including consultation, TRUS biopsy of the prostate, cystoscopy. We treat urologic conditions including open, laparoscopic and endoscopic treatment of cancers of the kidney, ureters, bladder, prostate, testicles and penis; urinary tract stones with laser or percutaneous treatment; urinary tract obstruction.

We are a teaching hospital and your care may include multiple urologists, urology registrars (training urologists) and junior doctors.We provide services via both The Canberra Hospital and Calvary Hospital Bruce.

Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery deals with blood vessels and includes a full range of venous and arterial surgery.

You can access our services through a referral from your GP or specialist, the Canberra Hospital Emergency Department or a Canberra Hospital ward after admission.

We are located in the Outpatient Corridor, Building 1, Level 2.

Pain Management Unit

The Pain Management Unit provides post-operative or trauma pain management services and supports people experiencing chronic pain or pain that persists for more than three months.

We are in Ward 12B, Building 3, Level 2 at Canberra Hospital.

You can access the Pain Management Unit through a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
